Screenshot of the error
When trying to open the file Resources/layout-land/main.axml from the Rotation demo in github, you get the error "The operation could not be completed. Invalid pointer". This error does not happen in Xamarin.Studio. In Xamarin.Studio the designer opens the file and renders it.
Here is the link to the project on github: https://github.com/xamarin/monodroid-samples/tree/master/RotationDemo
Just an update, I wasn't able to reproduce this issue in either Xamarin Studio or Visual Studio using Xamarin.Android 4.7.1, but a customer was, using 4.6.08. So it appears that this issue is still around.
Steps the customer used to reproduce:
1.Created a new “Android Ice Cream Sandwich Application” using VS2012.
a) By default the project that’s gets created has a Main.axml file under the Resources/Layout folder. When I double click this file, it opens up fine.
2. I created a folder “Layout-land” under the Resources folder.
3. Right clicked on the “Layout-land” folder and selected “Add -> New Item”.
4. From the “Add New Item” dialog box, I select “Android Layout” template and gave it a name SplitView.axml(This is what I referred to as a new layout file)
5. Now when I double click this “SplitView.axml” file, I get that error. “Operation could not be completed.Invalid pointer”.
Also confirmed that I have this working with 4.6.08 on my machine.

If the issue can't be reproduce and there isn't more information about the error, there isn't much I can do about it.
Actually, I could reproduce it. Fixed in master (ff4ba3c1e4a78cb7de).
Hello Lluis Sanchez,
I just install last version of Xamarin in Visual Studio 2012 and got this error, there is a workaround? what "Fixed in master" means?
Not fixed. In VS2013 and getting it in 4.10.1.
Still not fixed. Present in VS2012 with both 4.10.2 and 4.12.0
