Visual Studio has allowed spaces in the Solution names for a while and its very nice to have a space in the solution name. Not sure why this isn't allowed in MonoDevelop since you are following the Microsoft Visual Studio format for solutions and projects. Also the error has a error in it as it is saying the project name is illegal instead of the Solution. However it is a valid solution name per Microsoft's rules on solution naming.
Also spaces should be allowed in Project names as they are valid per Microsoft's rules as well. Project names with spaces create an assembly name with spaces as well, but the default namespace the spaces are replaced with underscores. This seems a valid approach to take.
Spaces are allowed by all modern files systems so not sure why this check is in place.
1. File -> New -> Solution
2. Other -> Blank Solution
3. Enter the name "Test Solution Name"
4. Choose a location to create it
5. Click OK
It creates the Solution with the spaces in the name.
Illegal project name.
Only use letters, digits, '.' or '_'.
