Comment 1 Mikayla Hutchinson [MSFT] 2012-11-26 07:31:19 UTC
Do you have a GTK+ in your PATH from some other app?
Comment 2 KvanTTT 2012-11-26 15:18:13 UTC
I only have "C:\Program Files (x86)\GtkSharp\2.12\bin;" in PATH environment variable. Removing it from PATH didn't solve the problem.
Comment 3 Mikayla Hutchinson [MSFT] 2012-11-26 17:56:27 UTC
That would be the correct one. Though I suppose it's possible that another GTK+ app has installed one in some other dll search directory such as system32. Do you know whether there's any other GTK app on the system? Can you check the MonoDevelop logs in AppData\Local\MonoDevelop-3.0\Logs\ to see whether there are log messages with more information about the failure? Could you try putting "C:\Program Files (x86)\GtkSharp\2.12\bin;" at the beginning of your PATH to make sure they're used before anything else?
Comment 4 KvanTTT 2012-11-27 03:48:11 UTC
I've put "C:\Program Files (x86)\GtkSharp\2.12\bin;" to beginning of PATH and it's didn't solve my problem. I suppose that problem is in Mono for Android app, how one can see from this log: http://pastebin.com/uRPVu7cW . How could I repair it?
Comment 5 Mikayla Hutchinson [MSFT] 2012-11-28 18:36:31 UTC
You may need to restart after changing PATH like that, FWIW.

Unfortunately the Android message isn't relevant. There's a serious problem with the native UI libraries that's preventing MD from loading any png images. My suspicion is still that it's a problem with another version of one of the native libraries being loaded, maybe libpng or something like that. Unfortunately this is difficult to diagnose without using specialized tools to find the full paths of all loaded dlls. Microsoft's ListDll tool might work but it might be difficult to run it before MD crashes.
Comment 6 Alan McGovern 2012-12-03 11:53:05 UTC
Which installer did you use to install gtk-sharp? Did you get it from the monodevelop.com site or from somewhere else?
Comment 7 Hans Jorgensen 2012-12-22 13:15:32 UTC
I have a similar problem with MonoDevelop: it crashes when the IDE opens on both my Win7 and Win8 x64 machines. However, my log is different than that of the original reporter, as is the exception that does MonoDevelop in:

Odd, that one looks like a .NET runtime crash:

write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is
corrupt.

Comment 9 Hans Jorgensen 2012-12-23 01:07:38 UTC
@Michael: Looking at the earlier exceptions, the system popped up with another issue with System.Runtime.Remoting:
System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingException: This remoting proxy has no channel
sink which means either the server has no registered server channels that are
listening, or this application has no suitable client channel to talk to the
server.
The stack trace for the final exception that killed the program involved Remoting methods, so this seems to be related to that. The issue also has something to do with there being no first-run content index (my guess is that MonoDevelop is trying to download it).
But if it is a .NET Runtime crash, should I file the bug with .NET?
Comment 10 Mikayla Hutchinson [MSFT] 2012-12-28 07:23:12 UTC
Okay, here's a quick analysis of the errors:

The first enum-parsing error (in LoggingService) is harmless, but I'll fix it anyway.

The "Unknown RuntimeVersion '4.5'" error is fixed already in master, but it doesn't break anything except loading of the 4.5 framework profiles.

No idea what the "Error: Cannot initialize OLE" is. I've never seen it before, so it might be important. It looks like could have something to do with initializing a STA COM component from a thread which is not STA, but I have no idea why this doesn't affect other MD installations.

The "ANDROID: Error finding Mono for Android SDK" is harmless, assuming you don't have MfA installed. I'll fix it anyway.

All the "failed to set text from markup" errors in the welcome page are because of incorrectly escaped markup in the welcome page news returned by the server, but they also shouldn't break anything else.

The "First run content index not found." warning is from an incomplete feature, and is harmless.

The "node [...] is not defined on the documentation map" warnings are from MonoDoc, and indicate that some help content was registered but not found. This is a minor packaging bug, and is harmless.

This error indicates that one of MonoDevelop's child worker processes failed to communicates with the main MD process. This may be because of a deeper problem, or simply because the main process was crashing:

System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingException: This remoting proxy has no channel
sink which means either the server has no registered server channels that are
listening, or this application has no suitable client channel to talk to the
server.

   at MonoDevelop.Core.Execution.IProcessHostController.GetLogger()
   at MonoDevelopProcessHost.Main(String[] args)

This is the crasher. It looks like it's the TCP remoting server in the main MD process. It could be .NET runtime bug, but more likely it's memory being trampled by bad unsafe code, bad P/Invokes, or bad native code. Unfortunately these kinds of indirect issues are very hard to track down.

So unfortunately there is no obvious place to start digging :/
Comment 11 Alan McGovern 2012-12-28 07:37:00 UTC
If this is actually caused by memory corruption (which seems likely) then it's more than likely caused by the glib logfunc we pass to native code so we can redirect the error messages to our log file. The managed signature in glib-sharp was incorrect. We fixed this in the gtk repository in an ABI compatible way but we may not have implemented a fix in all the required monodevelop branches. We need to redeclare the p/invoke with a delegate with the correct parameters instead of using the p/invoke declared in glib-sharp.
Comment 12 Mikayla Hutchinson [MSFT] 2012-12-28 07:50:15 UTC
Good point, considering the sheer number of glib log messages in the output here.
Comment 13 Hans Jorgensen 2012-12-28 12:23:51 UTC
Thanks for working on this. I don't know if it's the glib logfunc because I got a crash at the same point on a different computer that wasn't doing any logging at all - unless, of course, you also pass a dummy logfunc if there's no file to write to. Also, I should note that the unhandled exception does not show up in a log file - only the Cygwin terminal.
Comment 14 Hans Jorgensen 2013-01-01 13:54:30 UTC
A little more information for you: MonoDevelop 3.0.5 runs fine on my Win XP 32-bit machine with .NET 4.0 installed. I know that's a lot of changed variables, but it does show that nothing is wrong with MonoDevelop itself. Also, I tried running MonoDevelop as an administrator, and got more or less the same error log from Cygwin, though I did get a little farther into the program the first time. In all cases, the program crashes about 1 or 2 seconds after the main MD window opens, in which time I can hover over things and click on them.
Comment 15 Alan McGovern 2013-01-02 08:53:51 UTC
Would you be able to remove your existing installation of gtk-sharp and then install this newer version: https://files.xamarin.com/~duncan/gtk-sharp-2.0-11.msi . This is a new build we are testing out internally which might fix the issue you're describing. Do let me know if there is any change when using this version of gtk-sharp.

I have also committed some workarounds to monodevelop for the known issue we have with logging.
Comment 16 Alan McGovern 2013-01-02 08:55:06 UTC
Just to reinforce the point - you must uninstall the current version of gtk-sharp before installing this one as the version numbers have not been set to correctly upgrade an existing installation. If you try to install on top of an existing gtk-sharp no new files will be placed on your system.
Comment 17 Hans Jorgensen 2013-01-02 11:27:08 UTC
Thanks for the install, but it didn't work. When I tried running MonoDevelop, it crashed before it even finished loading, so I suspected that the underlying structure had been changed. So, I attempted to uninstall and reinstall MonoDevelop, when I was reminded that the installer only runs if GTK# 2.12.9, and only GTK# 2.12.9, is installed (it fails to detect higher versions). And I know that if I reinstall the older version of GTK#, I'll get the same problem again.
Comment 18 Alan McGovern 2013-01-02 11:40:16 UTC
In that case would you be able to install the original version of Gtk# that you had and then this build of MonoDevelop?

http://storage.bos.xamarin.com/monodevelop-windows-master/01/017957d16fa152cf976d6e0b7f96de540930f318/MonoDevelop-017957d16fa152cf976d6e0b7f96de540930f318.msi

If that still crashes then we're going to come up with some more diagnostics to try and figure out what is going wrong.
Comment 19 Hans Jorgensen 2013-01-02 11:57:43 UTC
It still crashes with more or less the same problems (BTW, I do not have Mono for Android installed, as far as I know):

This is very strange. What language operating system do you have? English? I'm running a few more diagnostics which might help me track down the problem, but at the moment I do not know what it could be. Thanks for testing those previous builds though, it helped narrow down some options for me.
Comment 21 Hans Jorgensen 2013-01-21 14:28:44 UTC
My OS's language is English. You're very welcome for testing the software!
