MonoTouch currently throws an exception if a null is passed as the context parameter for the method:

From apple's doc, nil is a valid parameter (from http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#Documentation/UIKit/Reference/NSAttributedString_UIKit_Additions/Reference/Reference.html):
A context object with information about how to adjust the font tracking and scaling information. On return, the specified object contains information about the actual values used to render the string. This parameter may be nil.
