Description Jeremy Kolb 2012-09-21 15:22:54 UTC
If the designer fails to load for whatever reason (but you still see the design/source tabs) clicking on the source tab just shows empty space. You can't edit the xml without opening the file with a separate editor.

I keep hitting this and it's a real problem. If you make a layout with the following malformed axml:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:orientation="vertical"
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="fill_parent">
    <TextView
        android:layout_width="fill_parent"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:text="Specifications" />
    <TextView
        android:text="Name:
        android:layout_width="fill_parent"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
    <EditText
        android:id="@+id/name"
        android:layout_width="fill_parent"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
    <TextView
        android:text="Manufacturer:
        android:layout_width="fill_parent"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
    <EditText
        android:id="@+id/manufacturer"
        android:layout_width="fill_parent"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
</LinearLayout>

The designer will tell you that it can't load the file (after pausing for about 30 seconds rendering VS unuseable) but you can't go to the Source tab to change it. since there's no intellisense for the axml files it's REALLY easy to fall into this situation.

This will be fixed in Mono for Android 4.2.7
