It would be be nice if the debugger allowed batching method calls and field accesses. Currently each method call or field access involves a TCP roundtrip, and over USB this takes ~10ms. This means that evaluating a lot of properties and ToString calls can take a lot of time simply because of the sequential roundtrips.
Ideally MonoDevelop could send a single request with a list of methods+args and fields, and receive all the results either in a single response or asynchronously.
Fields accesses can already be batched using TypeMirror/ObjectMirror.GetValues ().
Batched method invocations are now supported on master using the new
ObjectMirror.BeginInvokeMultiple () method. There are some comments in ObjectMirror.cs on how to use it.
The runtime parts have been backported to mobile master as well, the only problem is that the protocol version in the runtime can not be incremented, so the only way to detect whenever this is supported by the runtime is to call it.
Can we close this bug then?
No, we need MonoDevelop to actually make batched invocations and field accesses.
We already made many optimizations, so this may not be required anymore. In any case, we have to look to debugger performance as a whole, since we may be able to do simpler changes with a bigger impact.
