Description mr.pearce 2017-05-11 09:28:55 UTC
First of all i dont know if it is really a VS xamarin bug or an xamarin.ios bug since it Came with 15.2.

If i build my Xamarin.Forms(pcl) iOS App i get this error.
Can not resolve reference: C:/Windows/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v4.0.30319/de/mscorlib.resources.dll

Also Tested with new Xamarin.Forms(pcl) project and new native Ios Project.
Android projects are building fine.
Comment 1 mr.pearce 2017-05-11 09:32:26 UTC
Please Note i Updatet VS 2017 to 15.2 and also Installed VS for Mac on my Mac.
Also tried (the current version of) Xamarin Studio for Mac will still produce this bug.

Comment 3 André Krämer 2017-05-11 11:54:54 UTC
I have exactly the same issue:

What I did:

1. Upgrading Visual Studio for Mac to RTM
2. Upgrading Visual Studio 2017 (Windows) from 15.1 to 15.2

Since then I can't build any Xamarin.iOS Projects in Visual Studio (Windows).

The build output shows the following errors:

2>C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise\MSBuild\Xamarin\iOS\Xamarin.iOS.Common.targets(747,3): warning : The assembly 'mscorlib.dll' was loaded from a different path than the provided path (provided path: /Users/andrekramer/Library/Caches/Xamarin/mtbs/builds/SavedItXF.iOS/79ae9b114fc84ed7b0481deb450daabc/bin/iPhoneSimulator/Debug/mscorlib.dll, actual path: /Library/Frameworks/Xamarin.iOS.framework/Versions/10.10.0.33/lib/mono/Xamarin.iOS/mscorlib.dll).

I already tried to uinstall VS 2017 Mac and Xamarin Studio Mac and reinstalled VS 2017 Mac because I wasn't sure if VS 2017 for Mac Preview installed some alpha bits on my mac (since it was on the alpha channel during preview) which cause my remote build to fail
Comment 4 jeroen.bernsen 2017-05-11 12:52:35 UTC
Same error here, after upgrading Xamarin to VS2017 on Windows and Mac. I did not have VS Mac Alpha installed.

Please fix asap, i cannot continue!

The only thing I noticed was that Windows is running Xamarion.iOS 10.10.0.30 and Mac is running 10.10.0.33, don't know if that has anything to do with it ?

Comment 9 siwicgrey 2017-05-11 15:39:58 UTC
Same problem here, but with a little difference that it's not */de/* but */ja/*.

My guess would be, that it's caused by having either japanese keyboard (or language altogether) installed. As secondary ofc, my system is defaulted to English in every way.

Comment 11 John Miller [MSFT] 2017-05-11 16:58:12 UTC
Hi All,

Im currently working on reproducing this with 15.2. If you experience this too, please add more details including the following:

* Your version information from the IDE -> Help -> About -> Copy Information.
* Upload an attachment for a project that reproduces this if you can share it with details on what to build to reproduce the error.
* Attach a diagnostic build log.
* Confirm if a File -> New Project has the same issue.
* Confirm that simple things like deleting bin/obj don't change the behavior.

Thanks!

I'll update soon once I've completed my non-engineering review.
Comment 12 Fabio Di Peri 2017-05-11 17:00:15 UTC
I found a workaround. I copied that .dll from my Windows box to ~/Library/Caches/Xamarin/mtbs/builds/{myproject}/{uuid}/C:/WINDOWS/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v4.0.30319/{language code}/ on the Mac, and now it builds

The language code depends on your Windows install main language, in my case it was `it` (the same that appeared in the VS error)
Comment 13 jdbenitez 2017-05-11 17:29:10 UTC
The solution of Fabio Di Peri on comment 12 worked for me. my language code is "es"

thank you very much Fabio!
Comment 14 siwicgrey 2017-05-11 17:54:02 UTC
Confirmed, workaround from Comment 12 works.
Comment 15 André Krämer 2017-05-11 19:19:36 UTC
@ John Miller:

File -> New Project has the same issue. So there is no need to attach a real project. I tried both, a new Xamarin.Forms Project (XAML + PCL) as well as an new iOS Single View App. Both create the same issue, that iOS projects can't be remote compiled on a non-english Windows.

For those who tried the Comment 12, did the folder already exist in ~/Library/Caches or not?
I don't have anything related to Xamarin in the caches folder.

After a lot of rebuilds and cleans, my error changed from "can't resolve mscorlib.dll" to "can't resolve mscorlib.resources.dll"
Comment 19 A.Maury 2017-05-12 07:56:48 UTC
Sorry about my previous Comment I'm not very used to Mac, I wasn't looking at the right Library folder.

Comment 12 also worked for me! Thank you Fabio Di Peri

Same problem on my Visual Studio Enterprise with Xamarin.iOS 10.10
Comment 23 Wan Yuee 2017-05-12 14:14:37 UTC
Giving my two cents here.

(Bear with me, the story started from the beginning right from installation)

What I did notice was :

1) When I installed Visual Studio for Mac the installer was in a different language (zh-Hans) than my Primary language (English).

Verified it with the following terminal commands on my Mac :
# What languages installed on my MacOS
$ defaults read NSGlobalDomain AppleLanguages
(
    "en-MY",
    "zh-Hans-MY"
)

# The first entry is usually the primary language
$ langs=(`defaults read NSGlobalDomain AppleLanguages`);echo ${langs[1]/,/}
"en-MY"

Referenced from : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14908180/know-currently-logged-in-users-language-in-mac-via-shell-script#comment21002995_14908268

2) So I went ahead anyways and got Visual Studio for Mac installed, assuming it would probably follow my primary language for display. Verified this by opening the program on the Mac, looks fine.

3) Next, I went over to my Windows machine (English system), and started VS2017 (Update 2 already installed), and create new Coss Platform App + Xamarin Form + PCL Project (This should give me the good old "Hello Xamarin" screen when successful compile). Connect to the mac and run a iOS build. VS2017 gave me the following error:
- Can not resolve reference: C:/WINDOWS/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v4.0.30319/zh-Hans/mscorlib.resources.dll

4) Coming back to my Mac Machine, create a new Multiplatform app (This will give me an item list with "nice description" screens when successful compile) and it works just fine, I can see it on the iPhone Simulator.

5) Then I copy over the Hello Xamarin App to the Mac machine, and build. It also works just fine, I can see it on the iPhone Simulator. But if I repeat step 3 the problem comes back.

Note that I did not change any default language on my Hello Xamarin project, so in theory it should take the default language (English) and use that to build the project. Obviously that did not happen as it was still looking for the zh-Hans subfolder (the same language as what my installer was in).

Hi All,
I'm sorry you're facing this bug. There is a workaround for both the build and debug issues:
1- On Windows, open the Visual Studio 2017 installation folder. (Default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\<Edition>\)
2- Navigate to MSBuild\Xamarin.
3- Open the Xamarin.Apple.Sdk.targets file in an editor with Administrator privileges.
4- At the end of the file you'll find a PropertyGroup (line 100), between the PropertyGroup tags add the following line:
<FrameworkPathOverride>$(TargetFrameworkRootPath)$(TargetFrameworkIdentifier)\$(TargetFrameworkVersion)</FrameworkPathOverride>

In case you're still able to reproduce this bug after applying the workaround, please let us know and attach a Detailed build output and the Xamarin Logs (Help -> Xamarin -> Zip Logs...)

Thanks!

Yes Fix is working well now, just tested it by creating the Cross Platform App + Xamarin Form + PCL Project on Windows Visual Studio 2017.

Thanks!

this is actually a dup of bug 55515. THe problem manifests itself in a different way, but the root cause is the same... we were picking up the wrong version of mscorlib on the system.

it's fixed in https://github.com/xamarin/XamarinVS/commit/3fcb6c063b22b8b98ea0930ffef15cfbc82f6c36

and should be delivered in 15.2.2 due to ship in a few days.

- Note that Comment 34 is referring to the bug as a whole, and not Comment 33 in particular.

(As a side note, @Fabio, Comment 33 appears to be a separate error that does not match the rest of the bug report. Further troubleshooting for that issue should be handled on a new bug report, or on the Forums or Stack Overflow for troubleshooting suggestions from the Xamarin community. Thanks!)

- Note also that the link to Bug 55515 and https://github.com/xamarin/XamarinVS in Comment 34 are mentioned purely for internal bookkeeping purposes. They are not publicly visible and can generally be disregarded by users. The key piece of information from Comment 34 for users watching this bug is the last comment about the planned inclusion in the upcoming Xamarin 15.2.2 release. That information aligns with the bug's current Target Milestone.

Have verified the scenario
1-creating the Cross Platform App + Xamarin Form + PCL Project on Windows Visual Studio 2017 and Build the app
2-Created an single view app and build the app

Hence marking this issue as verified and Fixed.
