Description Brendan Zagaeski (Xamarin Team, assistant) 2017-03-08 03:40:17 UTC
"Visual Studio Preview" does not yet include any new Xamarin version, even though the Xamarin Alpha updater channel for VS 2015 and VS 2013 does include a new version

This is situation is intentional for now. As mentioned in the Visual Studio Preview version announcement [1], the first available feature in the preview is the Python development workload. The Xamarin Alpha channel preview versions are _not_ currently part of the Visual Studio Preview, so users will see the same Xamarin 4.3.0 versions in both Visual Studio Preview and Visual Studio 2017.

The objective of this report is to provide visibility and tracking for this intentional difference in VS 2017 vs. VS 2015 and VS 2013 until it is resolved.

This enhancement request for tracking is inspired in part by related questions from users during the VS 2017 RC:

## Status update for current Visual Studio 2017 versions

- (2017-04-17) Visual Studio 2017 version 15.1 (26403.07)
- (2017-04-17) Visual Studio Preview version 15.2 (26412.01 - Preview)

Both of these current releases of "Visual Studio 2017" and "Visual Studio Preview" include the "15.1 Feature Release" versions of Xamarin [1].

## Cross-reference: Watch the Release Blog posts for information about the availability of each Xamarin release in VS 2017

For example, see the paragraph in https://releases.xamarin.com/alpha-release-15-2-alpha-preview-2/ that starts with "Note that this preview version is not yet available in Visual Studio 2017."

I will leave this bug open for now because there is some additional work in progress that will help make the available Xamarin version in Visual Studio 2017 Preview more tightly synchronized to the Xamarin updater channels. In the mean time, I will continue to update this bug in situations where the Xamarin updater channels might again offer builds that are not yet available in Visual Studio 2017.

(The Xamarin extension build number in Visual Studio 2017 Preview is at the moment slightly ahead of the build number for Visual Studio 2015.)

Taking off the 15.4 milestone, but keeping open for tracking until this issue is resolved, as defined by Brendan.
Comment 13 Brendan Zagaeski (Xamarin Team, assistant) 2018-05-24 01:05:37 UTC
Now that new feature updates for Visual Studio 2015 Tools for Xamarin have concluded (as of the Xamarin 15.6 Release), this issue is no longer relevant. Visual Studio Tools for Xamarin updates are now _only_ available in Visual Studio 2017. I will accordingly mark this issue as resolved. Thanks!
