Create a new Xib somewhere. Move it to a different folder. UI shows file has moved but the .designer.cs is still referenced in the project somewhere and causes a compiler error.
Close the .sln and re-open it to see the broken reference to the .designer.cs file highlighted in red. You must then delete this broken reference to make the solution build.
Was this an old MonoTouch project? Designer source files are no longer linked with the .xib so this isn't an issue anymore (since MT4 or 5)
Its a brand new MT project 188.8.131.52
Create a new MT solution, select tabbed solution.
Create a new directory when the initial solution has loaded.
Grab SecondViewController.cs and SecondViewController.xib and drag and drop them to the new folder. Click build & you get:

error CS2001: Source file `/Users/solvdltd/Projects/TestBugs/TestBugs/SecondViewController.designer.cs' could not be found

The left hand window shows SecondViewController.designer.cs as being in the new folder but if you close and open the solution you see the broken reference to the .designer.cs
file highlighted in red.
This looks like it applies to grouped files in general.
Same in MT 6, MD 184.108.40.206. I created a storyboard and moved all of my view controllers to seperate folders, the designer files are no longer found.
fixed in git master
