RESOLVED FIXED

Description Mikael Nensén 2016-10-05 20:34:35 UTC
Just opened up a project that I hadn't touched since before summer. I've updated Xamarin on the Mac and on my PC (Visual Studio Extension). Tried to build, but instantly get the following:

An error occured on client Build420703 while executing a reply for topic xvs/Build/4.2.0.703/execute-task/Merlot.App.iOS/a637169%2FACTool

Diagnostic output gives me the following:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Xamarin\iOS\Xamarin.iOS.Common.targets(1028,3): warning : An error occured on the receiver while executing a post for topic xvs/Build/4.2.0.703/execute-task/Merlot.App.iOS/a637169%2FACTool and client build2444cybro

A new/empty cross platform (shared) project builds without any issue.
Comment 1 Mikael Nensén 2016-10-05 20:35:37 UTC
Btw, why haven't you fixed the template for shared cross platform, it's still missing the Ad-Hoc and AppStore build configurations.

The project

The stripped out iOS part of the project.

I am also facing the same issue.
Rebuild failure because of this error.I updated the new version of iOS and xamarin in visual studio on 11th oct and it worked for all these 3 days, but now it's an error.

Hi,

Same issue here, everything was building properly yesterday, and today when i opened back my project, impossible for me to build with the same error message.

Thanks

Hi all, thanks for reporting!

I was able to reproduce this issue using the attached solution and found out the build is failing because there are references to a LaunchImage in the csproj, but the referenced files are missing.

We need to understand why those files are missing to be sure that’s not being caused by a bug:
-Did you try to delete the LaunchImage using the Assets editor?
-Are you using a source control and those files were never added there?
-Did you manually deleted those files?

To check which Asset file is missing you could check the XMA Build Agent log.

In the other hand, we will work to improve the error message thrown in Visual Studio.

Thanks!

I don't remember touching those files, but I can definitely say that I didn't touch them between the project building, updating Xamarin and then getting the build error.
Comment 8 antony.rey 2016-10-21 07:24:23 UTC
Hi all,

on my side the issue was related to a missing Assets.xcassets file :

- i made a branch of my project in TFS, however i discovered that Assets.xcassets files are not added automatically to source control, you need to do it manually through Team Source Explorer.

However watching at the log files never gave me a clue on what was the issue, i just had this generic error with no detail at all...

Thanks, have a nice day !
Comment 9 NMackay 2016-10-28 14:02:48 UTC
Hi,

Thanks for the pointers.

When you branch the solution in TFS (2012) It added this item group that previously didn't exist.

  <ItemGroup>
    <ImageAsset Include="Resources\ImageAssets.xcassets\AppIcons.appiconset\Contents.json">
      <InProject>false</InProject>
    </ImageAsset>
    <ImageAsset Include="Resources\ImageAssets.xcassets\LaunchImages.launchimage\Contents.json">
      <InProject>false</InProject>
    </ImageAsset>
    <ImageAsset Include="Resources\logoMark.xcassets\AppIcons.appiconset\Contents.json">
      <InProject>false</InProject>
    </ImageAsset>
    <ImageAsset Include="Resources\logoMark.xcassets\LaunchImages.launchimage\Contents.json">
      <InProject>false</InProject>
    </ImageAsset>
  </ItemGroup>

Removing it from the branched solution allows compiling again.

@cybrosys: could you please confirm if you're still able to reproduce the issue or if the any of the above ideas/solutions works for you too? Thanks, Adrian
Comment 11 mag@xamarin.com 2017-06-15 20:51:14 UTC
Hi,
We have added several improvements around xcassets from the time the bug has been reported.
Given that we didn't get more information or feedback about it, we are closing this bug as Resolved.
If you’re still facing this issue with current 15.3 Xamarin bits, please feel free to reopen the bug.
Thanks
