Using the latest Gtk+ version from Mono 2.10.9 which is 2.24.10 the Gtk+ triangle used in Gtk treeviews is no longer able to expand or collapse a tree.
In this screencast, you can see how the enter/leave mouse into the little triangle shows the triangle going black/white.
They work sometimes, but at some point they get into a state where they no longer work. Not even using the spacebar on the item when selected works.

Mono 2.10.9 (tarball Wed Feb 29 17:12:24 EST 2012)
This bug only seems to happen in MonoDevelop in the "Debug" layout.
If you switch to a different layout, the disclosure indicator works.
We determined that this is not really a Gtk+ bug, but it seems that if "Deploy to Device" pad is active, then the Gtk+ triangle does not work.
Steps to reproduce:
* Deploy application to Device
* Ensure that the Deploy to Device pad is visible
* Set a breakpoint
* Run app
* Stop at breakpoint
* Try to go to local variables or the solution
* Notice that the disclosure buttons do not work.
We don't know that it's not a GTK+ bug, all we know is that switching dock layout (which causes mapping and unmapping of widgets) seems to fix/break the GTK+ treeview.
This is most likely fixed by this commit in upstream GTK+:

GtkTreeView: make tree expanding/collapsing more robust
gtk_grab_remove() *after* we did the expanding/collapsing, otherwise
grab_notify() might kick in and mess with our state. Fixes bug #675835.
Could somebody verify this is now fixed? IIRC we don't have access to "deploy to device" windows.
This wasn't reliably reproducible so it's not possible to verify for sure. However, I haven't seen this mentioned in some time, so let's close it. It can be reopened if it comes up again.
