When creating an asset catalog, there are no options for iOS 8 and later.
This mean that the following iPhone launch images are missing and are unable to be set:
Retina HD 4.7 Portrait
Retina HD 5.5 Portrait
Retina HD 5.5 Landscape
I think this documentation is also obsolete:
is the necessary file name for iPhone 6 Plus in Portrait mode.

For comparison Xamarin Studio on Mac does include the desired sizes
As shown in the attached screenshot, Xamarin Studio includes:
iPhone Portrait iOS 8,9:
- Retina HD 5.5
- Retina HD 4.7
- Retina HD 5.5
In contrast, the Visual Studio asset catalog editor does not include these sizes.
For tidiness I will mark this as a duplicate of a slightly earlier report about the same problem.
