1) create a console project
2) Create a directory outside the project tree called 'gtk-gui'and add files to it
3) Right clikc and choose to Add Existing Folder to your project
4) Choose the gtk-gui directory

The files never show up in the solution pane even though they are in the csproj.

This is still an issue in Xamarin Studio 6.2
