Description Anubhav Ranjan 2015-05-15 10:13:37 UTC
One of our customers is facing issues with Entry Control in Android using Xamarin.Forms.

#Description:
===========
Entry control in Xamarin forms is not working as expected. When I bind a decimal property which has PropertyChanged event raised with Entry Control. Then not able to enter decimal values.

I have shared the sample application in google drive "https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3dmEXUs1BmENVllZUZsekllUzg/view?usp=sharing"

For example

In the shared project. I have Student class which has Name, Maths, Science properties. Instance of student class is bound to the StudentView through StudentViewModel. Where PropertyChanged event is raised on the Maths property only. After running this application. I am able to enter decimal values (77.77) to Science Entry Control but not for Maths Entry Control.

public class Student : ViewModelBase
{
private string _Name;
public string Name
{
get { return _Name; }
set { _Name = value; }
}

private decimal _Maths;
public decimal Maths
{
get { return _Maths; }
set
{
_Maths = value;
OnPropertyChange("Maths");
}
}

private decimal _Science;
public decimal Science
{
get { return _Science; }
set { _Science = value; }
}
}

Note: In sample project. When I Enter . in the Maths Entry Control the cursor moving to start position of the entry. Then I can able to enter decimal values. But in my real project I am not able enter decimal values at all.

Indeed. Cannot enter decimal value in math control.

Hi Anubhav,

I have been able to reproduce this issue, however this is not a bug with Forms. By default, Entry.TextProperty is TwoWay bound. When the user is entering Text via keyboard, OnPropertyChanged is being fired in the view model, which will then updating the Text property of the ui. What is happening in this case, is that the user is typing some numbers followed by a period which is then sent to the view model to update the property, (ex. "51." gets sent to the view model and the "51." is truncated to "51" and the ui is updated with this value) This gives the appearence that the "." character cannot be added. There are a few workarounds. You could change the property type to be a string and handle any type conversion in your view model or you could do a one way binding from the view model to your view and batch update the view model properties when your editing has been completed. (i.e. scienceEntry.Completed += (s, e) => viewModel.Student.Science = decimal.Parse(scienceEntry.Text)). I think the first approach would be cleaner. I am marking as Resolved Answered. Thanks!
