screenshot of what is happening

After upgrading to Xamarin Studio 5.9 - I can not see what I am typing in the search box on the top right of the xamarin studio. It is searching but no text being shown to what I am typing.

If I have a source file open it seems to type the text into that file as well. Please see attachment. In screenshot you can see I typed account, nothing in the text box (white on white), cursor does advance as though there is text in there but what I typed "account" is now in the top of the source file currently open. Search is being recognized as you can see from the list of files with the word account being displayed.

Excellent. One more little request if you have time you can:

1. Delete the `~/Library/Logs/XamarinStudio-5.0` folder [1].

2. Delete the `~/Library/Caches/XamarinStudio-5.0` folder too, just on the small chance that that might help with the problem.

3. Reproduce the problem in Xamarin Studio 5.9.

4. Zip up the `~/Library/Logs/XamarinStudio-5.0` folder, and attach the zip file to the bug report.

[1] This folder can also be opened via "Help -> Open Log Directory" in Xamarin Studio.
Comment 2 Paul Farrow 2015-04-30 14:52:07 UTC
Nothing is recreated in that folder ie its not writing anything to the log. :(
Comment 3 Brendan Zagaeski (Xamarin Team, assistant) 2015-04-30 15:11:47 UTC
Whoa. Now that by itself is even fairly interesting. Perhaps you deleted the log folder after starting Xamarin Studio 5.9? If so, then there are indeed no updates to the log file being written during the search process.

If _starting Xamarin Studio_ doesn't create log files, then that's another strange behavior that might itself be a clue about what is unique about your system.

So, the quick question: if you restart Xamarin Studio, does that create some log files? If so, you can attach those. They might for example include some information about which assemblies are being loaded during startup (and similar) that will be helpful.

Thanks again!

One other quick question, and a quick note while we're at it:

1. Does this happen for every project you've tried? For example, does it happen in brand new project created from a template.

2. The description of the symptoms where the text gets typed into the text editor sounds suspiciously similar to this:

So with a little luck, this issue is already fixed in the development branches and will be released in the upcoming Xamarin Studio 5.9.1 "service release".
Comment 5 Paul Farrow 2015-04-30 15:34:12 UTC
Woops my bad, I obviously didn't actually quit the studio completely before removing the folder. Have done that now and zip file attached of that folder.

Also I can confirm doing a new ios app exhibits the same behaviour. Types in the currently opened file and white on white text in the search bar but is actually searching.

Perfect. Thanks!

I'll take a look at it. I myself couldn't get this behaviour.
