Description Jon Goldberger [MSFT] 2015-03-31 16:38:57 UTC
## Description

Taking a few pictures with the CameraAppDemo sample causes the app to crash with a Java.Lang.OutOfMemoryError. I am not sure if this is just and issue with the sample or a deeper issue with Xamarin.Android or Android itself. If it is an issue with the sample because the sample is not releasing resources, then the sample should be updated to properly release resources to avoid the Java.Lang.OutOfMemoryError exception.

## Steps to reproduce

1. Download and open the CameraAppDemo from http://developer.xamarin.com/recipes/android/other_ux/camera_intent/take_a_picture_and_save_using_camera_app/

2. Load and deploy the app to an Android device with a camera.

3. Click the "Open Camera" button and take a picture.

4. Click the "Save" button. This returns you to the initial page... note that the picture is not displayed in the ImageView due to an error in the code.. that the ImageView Bitmap is only set in OnCreate and OnCreate is not called when OnActivityResult is called. But this does not matter for the OutOfMemory issue, so you can ignore the fact that the picture is not shown.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you get a crash. It takes about 4 or 5 pictures on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 device, but will vary depending on the memory available on a particular device.

Expected result: App will not crash with an OutOfMemory exception.

Actual Result: App crashes with OutOfMemory exception with stack trace as follows:

Comment 1 Jon Goldberger [MSFT] 2015-04-01 15:09:42 UTC
After speaking with Jon P, I added GC.Collect() to the end of OnActivityResult and that resolves the issue. Apparently in this case you do need to call GC.Collect() to dispose of the Java side Bitmap.

I am no longer seeing any memory leakage. I am going to leave this issue open, though, so that the sample can be updated.
Comment 3 Peter Collins 2015-06-09 12:14:43 UTC
I'm not able to reproduce this with the sample from the web (which now has the GC.Collect () call). I'm also unable to reproduce this error with the version of the sample found in the monodroid-samples repo which wraps bitmap usage in a 'Using' block.

@Asimk can you link me to the project you are using to reproduce this issue?
Comment 5 asimk 2015-06-09 12:46:49 UTC
I have provided the sample in above comment, so marking this issue as confirmed.
Comment 6 Peter Collins 2015-06-09 13:19:10 UTC
@Asimk the version of the sample you have provided has the GC.Collect () line commented out (MainActivity.cs L. 52). If you uncomment this line, as is provided by the current version of the recipe on the site, you should no longer be able to reproduce this.
Comment 7 asimk 2015-07-07 14:35:40 UTC
I have checked this issue with updated sample using latest build and observed that it is working fine, hence closing this issue.
I have checked this issue with XS and VS both using Nexus 5.

Environment Info:
XS 5.9.4.5
XVS 3.11.666
XA 5.1.4.6
