Description Jon Douglas [MSFT] 2015-03-17 15:34:42 UTC
*Description

When attempting to use an <include> or <merge> xml tag, the designer does not seem to find the appropriate layout.

Given the following .axml files:

main.axml:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:orientation="vertical"
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="fill_parent">
    <include
        layout="@layout/progress_with_text"
        android:layout_width="wrap_content"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
</LinearLayout>

progress_with_text.axml:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<merge xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
    <TextView
        android:text="Loading..."
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:layout_width="wrap_content"
        android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge"
        android:id="@+id/lblLoading"
        android:layout_marginLeft="180dp"
        android:layout_marginTop="240dp" />
    <ProgressBar
        android:id="@+id/progBar"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:layout_width="wrap_content"
        android:layout_marginLeft="130dp"
        android:layout_marginTop="230dp" />
</merge>

Thus causing the designer to throw a:

The layout could not be loaded: You must specify a valid layout reference. The layout ID @layout/progress_with_text is not valid.

Yet it is defined in the Resource.designer.cs file:

		public partial class Layout
		{

			// aapt resource value: 0x7f030000
			public const int main = 2130903040;

			// aapt resource value: 0x7f030001
			public const int progress_with_text = 2130903041;

			static Layout()
			{
				global::Android.Runtime.ResourceIdManager.UpdateIdValues();
			}

			private Layout()
			{
			}
		}

I have checked this issue and with the help of bug description I am able to reproduce this issue.

Error Details: You must specifiy a valid layout reference. The layout ID @layout/progress_with_text is not valid.

Screencast:http://www.screencast.com/t/dhldip3MtM1M

IDE logs: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/2b7052564431c19b285d

Additional Info: Reopen the same solution doesn't shows the above error but doesn't show the content of "progress_with_text.axml" file. However when I try the same on XS (5.7.2.8) , I am not getting this issue. It is working fine on XS.

Thanks so much for taking the time to submit this report! I attempted to reproduce this issue based on the bug description with the latest Visual Studio 2017 Preview version 15.3, and I was unable to hit the problem. If this issue is still occurring for you, please reopen this report and attach a reproduction, ideally starting with a new template project and then adding just the code necessary to demonstrate the issue.
