The Windows/.Net FileDialog shows thumbnail images for image files, making it easier to choose which one you want. The Mono implementation uses a single icon for all files. Image names are frequently not meaningful, making the thumbnail almost essential.
I have a working implementation that displays thumbnails, but it's a bit slow: it takes about 1 second for every 30 image files in the folder on my relatively fast developer machine. When I'm happy with my code, I'll post a pull request (probably next week sometime).
My proposed fix has been submitted as https://github.com/mono/mono/pull/1634.
The proposed fix uses a background thread to generate the thumbnail images, so the slow rate of generation doesn't stop the user from seeing the list of files fairly quickly. The thumbnails appear as they are created.
