Problem is described in this forum post: http://forums.xamarin.com/discussion/33678/x-reference-not-working
The markup extension for x:Reference appears to have been dropped from Xamarin Forms assembly. The post above describes a simple way that I worked around this (by implementing my own), but it seems unlikely that this was dropped from the product on purpose. It is still described as an integral part of Xamarin Forms in the topic "View-to-View Bindings" of this documentation page: http://developer.xamarin.com/guides/cross-platform/xamarin-forms/xaml-for-xamarin-forms/data_binding_basics/
x:Reference is not missing. but the original issue about x:Reference not working within DataTemplates looks genuine.
I have also encountered this issue. x:Reference doesn't work when used inside a DataTemplate. This is basic!!! Please fix ASAP!
