Description d.sturm 2015-02-19 03:01:32 UTC
When building a newly created sample project under C:\dev\Xamarin in Visual Studio 2013 with Xamarin 3.9.289 the following exception is thrown during build process:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Xamarin\Android\Xamarin.Android.Common.targets(2,2): Error MSB4018: The "GetAdditionalResourcesFromAssemblies" task failed unexpectedly.
System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: startIndex cannot be larger than length of string.
Parameter name: startIndex
   at System.String.Substring(Int32 startIndex, Int32 length)
   at Xamarin.Android.Tasks.GetAdditionalResourcesFromAssemblies.Execute()
   at Microsoft.Build.BackEnd.TaskExecutionHost.Microsoft.Build.BackEnd.ITaskExecutionHost.Execute()
   at Microsoft.Build.BackEnd.TaskBuilder.<ExecuteInstantiatedTask>d__20.MoveNext() (MSB4018) (Xamarin.Droid)

This seems to be due to the code in GetAdditionalResourcesFromAssemblies.Execute searching for "Xamarin" on the full path and then finding the wrong part. Presumably searching from end to front should fix it, but I didn't look too carefully at the code.

Workaround: Avoid a path containing "Xamarin".

I have tried to reproduce this issue but not able to reproduce it. To reproduce this issue I have followed below steps.

1. Open VS.
2. Create Android Application under C:\dev\Xamarin.
3. Build the application.

It build Successfully without any error. Same as screencast: http://www.screencast.com/t/KMRX2Lwajq

Could you please provide us Environment info and Ide log.
You can get Environment info Via Help-> About Microsoft Visual Studio-> Copy Info and Ide log via Help-> Zip Xamarin Logs.

@radek: Please see stack trace in Comment #0. There's only one .Substring() call in GetAdditionalResourcesFromAssemblies.Execute(), so it should be straightforward to reason about this... :-)

I think the problem with reproducing this is due to the fact that I tagged the bug under Xamarin.Android, instead of Forms. While the problem only appears for Xamarin.Forms on Android, this still seems like the wrong way to tag this in retrospective.
Comment 6 asimk 2015-08-26 06:57:01 UTC
I have also tried to reproduce this issue with Xamarin.Forms application but I am still not able to reproduce the reported behavior.

As of now I am leaving this issue in New state. We may have to see if a developer can figure out what's going on from the Logs.
Comment 7 Juan Marcelo Tondato 2016-08-19 14:03:43 UTC
It is not reproducible in our current public Beta bits (XVS 4.2.0).
