bug #1547 exposes a problem with the way we handle really large string values (or any other array types, presumably?).
we need a way for MonoDevelop to incrementally fetch the values for variables so that we can:
1. fetch JustEnough(tm) for display purposes
2. incrementally load the full value so that the user can cancel (imagine if the string value is 50 MB or something crazy)
This will need changes in the runtime as well as MonoDevelop (and possibly the VS plugin)
ArrayMirror actually has a GetValues(index, length) method, so this is already implemented. I'll add the same for String.
This has been implemented on HEAD (f42ba4a168e7cb9b9486b8a96c53752e4467be8)
/mobile-master (3258672056476ee8e81b8ba11524274c4e05655b). The Mono.Debugger.Soft changes are only on master, and they need to be merged into the copy used by md.
Hmm, looks like we'd need to backport a bunch of debugger protocol changes to mono-2-10
How feasible is this?
Actually, we don't need this for MonoTouch/Mono4Android. MonoDevelop can still implement the protocol even w/o its own Mono supporting this.
