RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 21111

Description Magnus Johansson 2014-07-26 10:07:10 UTC
Description of Problem:
Every time I make a change to XAML and build, I get "Error in custom tool". Doing a Build right again works.
But as soon as I make a new change, the error appears.
I always have to build twice.

I can't seem to find any error description on what went wrong in the errors pane.

See screencast: http://www.screencast.com/t/YM5DylNEe0ir

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Make a iOS Forms app
2. Add XAML Page
3. Make modification to XAML
4. Compile and observe error

Actual Results:
"Error in custom tool"

Expected Results:
No error

How often does this happen?
Every time I make a change in XAML

Additional Information:
Second build works fine

I try to reproduce this issue and not able to reproduce it. I have tried below steps:

1. I created an iOS Forms project.
2. Added XAML Page.
3. Made modification to XAML page.
4. Compile the application.

See screencast: http://screencast.com/t/IEzoa40bW

Environment Info :
Xamarin Studio Version 5.0.1 (build 3)
Git revision: f94ee866936d25105704eb63728ad5a981eda0a4

Hi Rajneesh,

Well that's good for you. However, this is not a very professional response from you. You are basically saying "works on my PC" and don't offer me any further advice or suggestions.
I am a paying customer for this product and I am expecting a little bit more than this amateurish quick and naive response.

I would have expected you to at least ask me to send you some log files, or anything.
You perfectly well know that your silly simple repro attempt doesn't reflect a project or solution that is a tad bit more complex than your repro case.

Now, is there anything you want me to send you?

Thanks.

Hi Magnus,

We are really sorry about the Rajneesh's comment1.

I try to reproduce this issue with the steps mentioned in bug description but I am unable to reproduce this issue. I am able to build the application successfully.

If you have a chance, it might also be helpful to include test sample, build information and XS logs. So that we can reproduce this issue at our end.

You can get build information and XS logs from here:

Build Information : Xamarin Studio=> About Xamarin Studio => Show details => Copy Information

XS Logs: Help => Open log directory => Ide logs (the latest one)

Thanks

For errors in custom tools, please also check the custom tool output pad.
Comment 5 Magnus Johansson 2014-07-28 12:42:28 UTC
I am not sure if I should open a new bug or continue on this, but the error message has now changed from "Error in custom tool" to "Failed to generate file". See screencast and attached log files.
http://www.screencast.com/t/NOZv7ehepsxG

Can't seem to find anything named "custom tool output", only "Tool Output".
Tool output attached.
Error pad is empty.

Should be fixed in https://github.com/mono/monodevelop/commit/04848d188efe9f5cd168f63ac8138df6a5e4f6f2

The real issue however is bug 21111 - the Forms addin should not be indicriminately setting MSBuild:Compile as the custom tool.
Comment 10 Mohit Kheterpal 2014-10-31 05:47:45 UTC
As per comment 8, the real issue for this error is filed in bug 21111.

Hence I am marking this issue is duplicate of 21111
