Description Dimitar Dobrev 2014-05-13 05:01:59 UTC
Visual Studio 2013 regularly get stuck at "Packaging application". It gets that "Microsoft Visual Studio is waiting for an internal operation to complete" and does not accept any input. I have to kill the process and start VS again. If there was an emulator running, the same happens. I have to then kill both VS and the emulator and start again. I lose from 10 to 15 minutes each time to make it run again and it happens at least 4 times a day. It never happened before 4.12.4 (your latest version at the time of writing).

Windows 7 64-bit
Visual Studio 2013
Intel emulator of 5" phone with 512 RAM and GPU enabled.
Comment 1 Dimitar Dobrev 2014-05-13 05:10:59 UTC
The Monodroid version is actually 1.12.278.
Comment 2 Dimitar Dobrev 2014-05-13 05:27:16 UTC
I downgraded to 4.12.2 and the problem disappeared. That is, it still gets stuck sometimes but at least I can cancel the build and try again, which does help.
Comment 3 Dominique Louis 2014-05-13 06:58:52 UTC
@Dimitar When you were on the 1.12.278 did you create a simple "Hello World" App, from the templates, to see if the same issue occurred?
Comment 4 Dimitar Dobrev 2014-05-13 08:01:28 UTC
I didn't but I've run a "Hello World" app with 4.12.2 and haven't had any kind of blocking. I guess it has to do with the size of my real app, 14 projects with lots of resources.

I have checked this issue with following builds:

VS 2013
Xamarin for VS 1.12.278

I have API18 and API19 emulator with Intel + RAM 512 and GPU enabled. When I run the android template application on these emulators, emulators gets starting, but without starting emulator completely, VS starts packaging application also installing application and then emulator gets crashed.

Debug log: https://gist.github.com/saurabh360/201b7524b14e99e2f6b8
Exception details: https://gist.github.com/saurabh360/d1b063ef6f3e1c6b771b
http://screencast.com/t/CcnSmy8f

When I run the application on emulator without having GPU enabled then application deployed and launched successfully.
Comment 6 Dimitar Dobrev 2014-05-14 05:23:26 UTC
I get this exception sometimes myself, with 4.12.2. I haven't tried it with GPU emulation off.
Comment 9 narayanp 2014-05-16 02:24:06 UTC
I have checked Issue on following machines and observed that If I create and start emulators from AVD manager(Not using IDE), in that case emulators gets crashed no need to deploy application using IDE(Xamarin Studio and Visual studio). I think this crash is not happening due to Xamarin product. It is happening in Android SDK

Checked with:
Windows 8.1 with SDK Tool 22.3 and 22.6.3
API19 with Intel + GPU -crashed
API19 with Intel + without GPU -Working
API17 with Intel + GPU -crashed
API17 with Intel + without GPU -working
API18 with Intel + GPU -crashed
API18 with Intel + without GPU -working
API18 with ARM + GPU -crashed
API18 with ARM + without GPU -working

Windows 7 with SDK tool 22.6
API19 with Intel + GPU -crashed
API19 with Intel + without GPU -crashed
API18 with ARM + GPU -working
API18 with ARM + without GPU -working

Windows 8 with SDK tool 22.6.3. and 22.3
All emulators are working fine on windows 8

Please let me know if you need anything here?

Hi Dimitar - does comment 9 match your experience?
Comment 11 Dimitar Dobrev 2014-05-22 04:14:53 UTC
Hi PJ - I've been unfortunately unable to test an Intel emulator without GPU so far. About Windows 8 - I don't and I won't have it so I don't know how it behaves there.
Comment 12 Dimitar Dobrev 2014-06-02 12:18:41 UTC
I can work around the issue by killing MSBuild.exe and then rerun the build.
Comment 13 asimk 2015-07-16 10:46:14 UTC
I have checked this issue with the latest stable build XVS 3.11.666 and XS 5.9.4.5. Now this issue is working fine I am successfully able to deploy the android application having API19 with Intel and GPU enable. Here is the screencast for the same: http://www.screencast.com/t/1asevbto

Hence closing this issue.
