Comment 1 Jon Goldberger [MSFT] 2014-04-25 18:40:12 UTC
I replicated this behavior:

1. Create an iOS project in VS 2013.
2. Open the project properties
3. Open the iOS Build settings page and click the advanced tab
4. Note that there is nothing in the Supported Architectures drop down by default and in the .csproj file, there is no XML element <MtouchArch>
5. Open the iOS Application settings page
6. Change the Deployment Target to 5.0 or greater
7. Save and close the project properties.
8. Note that there is now an entry for <MtouchArch>Default, ARMv7</MtouchArch> in the .csproj file.
9. Re-open the project properties.
10. Open the iOS Build settings page.
11. Click on the Advanced tab.
12. The supported architectures drop down menu is greyed out without any entry shown. Unable to select Armv7+Armv7s. Screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/X0PmHlfkM
13. Open the iOS Application settings page
14. Change the Deployment Target to < 5.0
15. Save and close the project properties.
16. Re-open the project properties.
17. Open the iOS Build settings page and click the advanced tab. Note that there is still no entry in the drop down, but is no longer greyed out.
18. Choose Armv7+Armv7s in the Supported Architectures drop down menu.
19. Open the iOS Application settings page
20. Change the Deployment Target to 5.0 or greater
21. Save and close the project properties.
22. The XML entry in the .csproj file is now <MtouchArch>Default, ARMv7, ARMv7s</MtouchArch>
23. Re-open the project properties.
24. The supported architectures drop down menu is greyed out without any entry shown.
25. Close the project properties.
26. The XML entry in .csproj reverts to <MtouchArch>Default, ARMv7</MtouchArch>

So it seems that one is unable to select ARMv7+ARMv7s when targeting iOS 5.0 or greater. Not sure if this is expected or not. The help bubble does say that ARMv7 is required for iOS 5.0 or greater but I would expect that that requirement would also be met with a setting of ARMv7+ARMv7s, so it seems like I should be able to select it.

## Up-to-date steps to reproduce

1. Create a new Classic API iOS app.

2. Pair to the Mac build host.

3. Double-click the `Info.plist` file to open it in the property list editor.

4. Change the "Deployment Target" to 5.0 or any value above 5.0, and save the change.
I tested all of the following values: 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, 7.0, 7.1, 8.0

5. Open the project properties.

6. Attempt to open the "iOS Build -> Advanced [tab] -> Supported architectures" drop-down menu.

## Result

The drop-down menu is disabled and contains an empty value.

The "empty value" issue was filed separately as bug 19240 (a regression between XamarinVS 1.10 and 1.12). Bug 19240 is less of a problem than this bug or bug 24150.

## Expected result

Xamarin Studio on Mac shows all of the following options when the "iPhone" platform is selected, even when the "Deployment Target" is greater than 5.0:
- ARMv7
- ARMv7 + ARMv7s
- ARMv7s

Xamarin Studio on Mac should shows just one option when the "iPhoneSimulator" platform is selected:
- i386

## Additional information

The Unified API will require additional entries in the "Supported architectures" drop-down menu, but I'll file that issue separately.

## Regression status: probably not a regression

Comment 4 Juan Marcelo Tondato 2014-11-12 11:19:56 UTC
Right now VS does not have an option value "i386" for supported architectures.

could you add the full specification related to this new value?

it implies changes in the end to end feature (deploy/debug/run).

Checked by changing deployment target to 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, 7.1, 8.2. Now
Supported architectures" drop-down menu doesn't shown in disabled mode.
Also it shows - ARMv7 , - ARMv7 + ARMv7s, - ARMv7s when iPhone is selected and
shows -i386 when the "iPhoneSimulator" platform is selected:

I can confirm that also on my installation (VS 2013 Update 4) the procedure indicated on Comment 3 returns the same result. The dropdown is empty and grayed out on VS while it is enabled and contains i386 on Xamarin Studio on Mac.
