When NSMenu has auto enabling of menu items turned on, it will query the application each time the menu is show whether or not to enable every menu item. This is done using either the NSMenuValidation or NSUserInterfaceValidation protocols. The process is described in detail here: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/cocoa/conceptual/MenuList/Articles/EnablingMenuItems.html
With the automatic menu enabling mode on, setting menu item's Enable property to false won't have the desired effect of disabling the menu. Instead, currently it is necessary to turn automatic menu item enabling mode off and manage the sate of all the menu items that would otherwise be automatically disabled/enabled.
PR has been merge a while ago, can we close this ?
