Description Ki 2014-01-14 15:53:49 UTC
Popup to choose which device to deploy to lists devices only by model name.
So if you have multiple devices of the same model you can't tell them apart.
Even worse, when you select any of them in the list it will always deploy to the first one with that name, so you simply cannot deploy to some of your connected devices.

This is specifically for when you deploy to actual devices plugged in through the usb port. Does not apply to simulators.

I have checked this issue and able to reproduce this issue. I have taken 2 devices of same model (Samsung Galaxy SII). In visual studio, I have faced the same issue described in Comment(0). Whatever I select from both list devices, my app was deploying to same device everytime.

Environment Info :

Xamarin 3.7.230.0
Xamarin.Android 4.18.0.39
Xamarin.iOS 8.4.0.0 (209abebbd8f1a292d042420edb45fa5fbd3f017b)

@Ki,
I have renamed the device by connecting to the machine by USB and observed that Android "Select Device" window lists plugged device only by the model name not the user defined device name.

And below are my observations:

I have checked this issue with the latest stable XVS 3.11.666 and observed that popup to choose which device to deploy to lists devices only by model name and that is showing only single i.e (Samsung Galaxy S II), not for equal to no of devices of same model no that I have connect to my machine.

For example I have connected to 'Samsung Galaxy S II" and in the popup to choose device is showing only "Samsung Galaxy S II" single time.

Screencast: http://www.screencast.com/t/zpBFjXKPox

Also when I select "Samsung Galaxy S II" in the list it will always deploy to the first connected device with that name, so you simply cannot deploy to some of your connected devices.

Thanks...!

this is reproducible in 4.0.0.1591

The current behavior is the same one supported by Android Studio. We are not planning to support showing custom device names due to the difficulties in doing so.

We do however support having two devices with the same model, and starting one or the other will properly start the selected one, so you'll be able to tell them apart that way.
