Mono is crashing under heavy load. I got a very simple selfhosted NancyFX webservice that's inserting users into cassandra using the datastax csharp driver, I'm using the LINQ driver to make my life easier. In order to make testing easy I issue a get request against /account/registerandom and it does a couple of cassandra queries and creates a random username and password. Self hosted NancyFX uses System.Net.HttpListener and then passes the data received on to the Nancy pipeline.

Here is what I do to reproduce the issue:
1. Start the self hosted NancyFX like this:

MONO_THREADS_PER_CPU=100 /opt/ahall-mono/bin/mono-sgen TestNancy.exe

Then keep this running.

2. Start 4 instances on this in 4 different ssh sessions:
ab -c 50 -n 1000000 "http://127.0.0.1:8989/account/registerrandom2

Then this crashes in between 1-2 minutes with the following backtrace:

GC tuning:
For the fun of it I tried tuning the GC params as such:
MONO_GC_PARAMS="nursery-size=32m,major=marksweep-fixed-par,major-heap-size=1g"

Using this it took the same tests as above around 3 hours to reproduce the crash.

NOTE:
Originally thought this was related to #9153 and Zoltan advised that this is a different issue. I'm running Mono master on Debian wheezy on amd64 with 4 cores in a VM:

I'm happy to carry out further tests and even provide you guys access to a VM with this environment and full source code, whatever it takes to help resolve this.

Happy to provide full core file, but it's 97 megabytes so would have to find a sensible way to share it.

Reason for running with 100 threads per CPU is that with default settings my program would lock up quickly and start dropping responses probably because the threadpool was full. With it set to 100 I'm getting decent performance, but hitting this crash instead.

We are seeing the same issue. Unfortunately an isolated test cases will be very tough to achieve, since it would need to duplicate the load. I've spent many hours trying to reproduce some runtime bugs without getting anywhere. Yet these issue still occur with a significant frequency in our product. 

Is there more debug logging we can turn on to help the mono team diagnose the issue here? Would a crash dump be helpful? What do you recommend?

You can try running with the MONO_GC_DEBUG env var set to one of the following:

Good afternoon.

  We see the similar problem in our environment with high loaded ASP.NET application on Linux 64-bit platform. The isssue is reprodicible with mono-3.2.2 and xsp 2.10.2. We have tried to simulate ASP application activity with simple C# application and have reproduced the SIGSEGV using it with the application that is attached, unfortunately it should work about a day to be reproduced, the stack trace looks like the following:

Hello Mark,

  I am sorry. I forgot to mention that our ASP.NET web service worked with files a lot, therefore we simulated this activity in the C# test application. It is neccessary to increase ulimit -n, before run the test application:

#ulimit -n 4096

  And small update from my side about virtual machine. It is placed in vmware ESX server, and it appears that it is not so easy to export it with full memory state and without other losses. Will do our best to share it with you ASAP.

  The machine was running on ESX 4.1 on a Xeon x5650 and will require 8GB of RAM to boot.

Hello Mark,

  Sorry for the delay, we had to download images and check them locally. Our checksums looks exactly as yours, I am providing them below for convenience. We was able to successfully pull down all the zip files and it did successfully unzip using 7zip. We are not sure what zip software you are using but as the MD5 hashes look to be good, could you please attempt again to unzip using 7zip.

VMWare will not resume this VM on my machine because it uses too much memory (I have 16gb - no idea why it won't allow me to run an 8gb VM).  I have to shut it down by force, and only then can I change its memory allocation, at which point the gdb session is gone, of course.

Can you give me instructions on how to run the test case on the VM?  I don't care if it has to run for hours.
