In my source code, I had

[Obsolete ("Use DownloadAllTheThings instead.");

(notice the ; instead of ])

building the file produced the following warning/error:

Encrypted/AppleDeveloperServices.cs(685,14): warning CS0658: `;' is invalid attribute target. All attributes in this attribute section will be ignored
Encrypted/AppleDeveloperServices.cs(686,96): error CS0589: Internal compiler error during parsingSystem.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

mcs --version
Mono C# compiler version 3.3.0.0
