What tool created that storyboard ?
The storyboard was created by Xamarin itself. Reproducible with a "blank" storyboard freshly created in the same project.
Interestingly, things work when opening the storyboard only from within XCode. Perhaps related to the XCode project file generation?
Can you provide us with all the version numbers of what you're using ?
The easiest way to get exact version information is to use the "Xamarin Studio" menu, "About Xamarin Studio" item, "Show Details" button and copy/paste the version informations (you can use the "Copy Information" button).
-> addin: not sure if it's the template ship with XS or something that happens when XS starts Xcode
Here are the version numbers:

I've just tried created a new "iPhone Storyboard" solution, and opening the generated storyboard in this solution works fine. This leads me to believe it has to do with the XCode project files that XS generates for the specific project I'm working on.
In the IDE log, I see the following:

Turns out this is not related to XS at all. XCode was crashing while scanning the SVN control directory:

My apologies for wasting your time.
