RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 14004

App-NestedProps.zip

MSBuild ItemGroup/Item properties are not preserved when the .csproj changes.

To reproduce:

1. Extract App-NestedProps.zip, then open App.sln
2. Note that App.csproj contains this fragment:

  <ItemGroup>
    <FooProp Include="$(IntermediateOutputPath)\Foo.cs">
      <Name>Key</Name>
      <Value>42</Value>
    </FooProp>
  </ItemGroup>

3. Within the Solution panel, right-click the App project then click Add > New
File...
4. Within the New File dialog, select General > Empty Class. Click New.
5. View App.csproj.

Expected behavior: the lines mentioned in (2) is unchanged.

Actual behavior: the nested elements are lost:

  <ItemGroup>
    <FooProp Include="%24%28IntermediateOutputPath%29\Foo.cs" />
  </ItemGroup>

This can cause the build to break, depending on how these properties are used.

Pro-tip: these are "item metadata", not "properties".

And the reason why they're lost is because the item is removed and a new one is added, because of bug 14004.
