RESOLVED NOT_ON_ROADMAP

Description bugzilla.xamarin.com 2013-08-15 18:01:56 UTC
when MONO_IOMAP=all is set, monodevelop fails to build a particular project that has a case sensitive mismatch between the filesystem and the solution. When MONO_IOMAP is not set, monodevelop successfully builds the project.

A second symptom is that right-clicking a folder and selecting "Open Containing Folder" fails on certain folders.

Steps to reproduce:
* hg clone https://bitbucket.org/BattleClinic/evemon
* MONO_IOMAP=all monodevelop&
* load EVEMon.sln
* In the solution tree, right click on the About folder and click "Open Containing Folder"
\- success
* In the solution tree, right click on the ApiTester folder and click "Open Containing Folder"
\- nothing happens
\- Observe that the pathname on disc is "evemon/EVEMon/APITester" but it is displayed as "ApiTester"
* Attempt to build the project
\- observe that a resource file fails to build with an unspecified error, and that the resource file exists in a directory that you cannot open from within monodevelop's solution tree via right-click and "Open Containing Folder"

MONO_IOMAP is intended as a workaround for running Mono-based apps that depend on case insensitivity, but it's not a magic fix. For example, although MonoDevelop itself will be able to load files even if the paths specified by the project do not match the case of the actual file, when it passes those incorrectly cased names to external programs such as your system's file browser, those program will fail because they *are* case sensitive.

Yep so should monodevelop explicitly disable MONO_IOMAP support when it loads, as it has its own way of dealing with case insensitive filenames?

I guess the MonoDevelop launch script could do so but there are lots of other things you can do you your environment that will break it, we can't check everything...

I would strongly advise against setting MONO_IOMAP in your environment, it is fairly expensive in terms of performance, and can break things. You should only set it on a case by case basis in the launch scripts for individual apps that really need it.
