Description Curtis 2013-08-02 13:22:20 UTC
Description of Problem:
Xamarin Update tries repeatedly to update GTK# for Windows from 2.12.0.0 to 2.12.22.
I think it must be failing because my GTK# for Windows version is 2.12.0.0

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open Xamarin Studio version 4.0.1.1 (build 6)
2. Select Help/Check For Updates
3. Xamarin will download update GTK# for Windows 2.12.22
4. Select 'Restart and Install Update"
5. Wait for update (which is instant) and wait for Xamarin Studio to reload.
6 Repeat steps 2-5 above and the same thing keeps happening...

Actual Results:
Appears that no update occurred

Expected Results:
Update should work and no more prompts for same update should appear.

How often does this happen?
Every time I try to update

I am having the same problem. Seems like it quickly tries to update and restarts Xamarin Studio. Perhaps it is encountering an error during the update. Is there some way for me to find an error log for this update attempt?

Could you please attach the updater log from AppData/Local/XamarinStudio-4.0/Logs/updater.log ? What version of Windows are you using?

According to this forum post you can work around this issue by installing the MSI file manually: http://forums.xamarin.com/discussion/7161/gtk-2-12-22-download-install-fail-repeat#latest

You can find the MSI in AppData/Local/XamarinStudio-4.0/Cache/TempDownload, the name should be something like 600D9C0E-3B74-4C51-B7E6-29A47E9325E4-2012022.msi

Ok, I did a search on *.msi and found one in the following folder:

AppData\Local\XamarinStudio-4.0\Cache\TempDownload\

To be sure it was the right one, I closed Xamarin Studio and then deleted the contents of the above folder. Then I opened Xamarin Studio again and had it check for updates. When it completed the download, I looked and saw that it had created a new .msi file in the above folder. Instead of installing from Xamarin Studio, I closed the update window and closed Xamarin Studio. I then manually ran the .msi file found in the above folder. During install, it said that it needed to close Xamarin Studio. I told it to do so, but it sat on it for a while. I opened my task manager, and sure enough, XamarinStudio was still running, though I had previously closed it. So I did 'End Process' on it and when it closed, the installer continued the installation. After it was all done, I opened Xamarin Studio and did Check for Updates and WALA!!! I am now 'Up To Date'.

I'm guessing that there is a problem getting Xamarin to close All the way down and that the installation script fails because Xamarin Studio doesn't close all the way down.
