The compiler isn't allowing an explicitly-implemented interface method to be marked 'async'

For example, something like:

interface IFoo {
    void Foo ();
}

class FooClass : IFoo {
     async void IFoo.Foo ()
     {
     }
}

Causes this error:
error CS0106: The modifier `async' is not valid for this item
