Description Allie Miller 2013-07-01 14:32:47 UTC
Test Project is in Case #39010

Behind a windows 7 firewall, which user tried to disable without any change. The computers are in the same local LAN.
A sample Hello_World project does debug with no issue.

When the projects is either built or clean (from the mac), building NOT for debugging from VS ends pretty quickly and it When building for debugging, the Debug and Build output log stays empty for a long time, while on the Mac Server Log there are all kinds of [Attempting to acquire command execution lock], etc which take a very long time.

Hi,

I think it's important to stress that even after removing every single file in the project, the build failed on the mac server log mentioning that it can't find resources not included anymore in the project.

Tried today to reinstall everything twice. no luck. Removed monotouch dir too.
Comment 3 Marek Habersack 2013-07-01 15:43:05 UTC
Andy,

Could you please attach the build server log file? You can find it on your Mac in ~/Library/Logs/Xamarin/MonoTouchVS/mtbserver.log

The actual build error should be in that file, it would help us immensely in diagnosing the problem, thanks!
Comment 4 Andy 2013-07-01 15:50:13 UTC
Hi

Here's part of my conversation with support, including the last log from the window. If you want it all I will post it tomorrow

One more hint. I've stripped down the project to a non-working barebone
thing. It still fails mentioning:

*7e3f81b1e592/bundle/AlchemicIphone.app/Resources/Images/Icon/white_background/58.png'
does not exist.*
*
*
*That's weird since I removed that file and folder*

Comment 5 Marek Habersack 2013-07-01 15:58:45 UTC
Andy,

No need for the rest of the log, thanks! The icon file my still be mentioned in Info.plist - which is one of the sources the content copier looks at. Open Info.plist as a text file and look for any keys referencing that file. If there are any, please remove both the key and the value and try compiling again. Please let me know if that worked.
Comment 6 Andy 2013-07-02 08:59:40 UTC
Hi,

tried to remove that item which in fact was there.

But now VS doesn't connect to the simulator at all (combobox stays grey)..
I also got this:

Please help, I know you're doing your best, but I've been with zero productivity for a week now !!!
Comment 7 Marek Habersack 2013-07-02 09:24:03 UTC
Andy,

It seems your modifications to Info.plist broke our plist parser - can you attach its current version? Good news is, the fix will probably be as easy as editing the file again :)
Comment 8 Andy 2013-07-02 09:36:41 UTC
Marek,

apparently just removing the <string> tag killed the plist. also just removing the outer array tag didn't work. I removed the next one and it worked.

Good news: the blank project now works (does nothing but doesn't give errors and starts on simulator

Bad news: I tried to to the same to the plist in the complete project. Now I get this error:

Mono.IOS.VisualStudio.MonoTouchPackage Warning: 0 : Initializing Mono.IOS.VisualStudio.MonoTouchPackage
Mono.IOS.VisualStudio.MonoTouchPackage Warning: 0 : Activation Check
Mono.IOS.VisualStudio.MonoTouchPackage Warning: 0 : Trial Ended : False. Start Upgrade : False. Start Expired : False. Start Invalid : False. Business Features : True.

Andy,

It looks like it might be file name casing issue. Check whether the files it fails to find are indeed named _exactly_ as shown in the stack trace.
Comment 10 Andy 2013-07-02 10:16:54 UTC
Case is identical, and most importantly, the file is there. If I clean the folder, all files get correctly copied
Comment 11 Andy 2013-07-02 10:24:26 UTC
I've tried to delete the file from the project (from VS).

Apparently it now builds correctly, but really, there must be something totally wrong. After taking a long while building (two minutes maybe) it apparently launched the previous -CLEANED- test project that I previously sent you. It was basically a copy of this project, stripped down of everything, so now instead of my app, a black screen comes up with the notice:
2013-07-02 15:57:52.227 AlchemicIphone[673:c07] Application windows are expected to have a root view controller at the end of application launch

Please note:
THIS IS NOT CAUSED BY THE PROJECT - THE PROJECT HAS A ROOT VIEW CONTROLLER

Really, there must be something totally wrong, at least with caching I think.

It's very annoying, sorry, I have to tell you...
Comment 12 Andy 2013-07-02 10:33:08 UTC
So after a long mess (I'll spare the details, I'm exhausted), it finally did build and launch correctly.

Now, whenever I re-add the file realm_culture.wav, it won't build anymore. I can add it from xamarin studio or VS, doesn't change anything.

What gives ?
Comment 13 Andy 2013-07-02 10:36:01 UTC
Correction: even without the aforementioned file, it does build and upload the app to the simulator, but now displays this error, when it fails to launch the app:

Comment 14 Vinicius Jarina 2013-07-08 12:40:26 UTC
Hi Andy
This error: "SpringBoard failed to launch application with error: 7" usually is a iOS Simulator error.

Try to reset your simulator and try again.

Delete Directory: ~/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator (http://screencast.com/t/lnUFMBrc)

Cleanup your Xamarin cache (http://screencast.com/t/ujmgiVbMONyn)

It's happening again. What gives ? What should I do ? Delete the string array every time ? Does it create problems ?

I have the last version of both xamarin.ios
Comment 17 Dominique Louis 2013-09-03 08:41:55 UTC
Andy, could you please clarify which part is happening again, as this thread shows several different issue have occurred.

Thanks.
Comment 18 Andy 2013-09-03 09:37:55 UTC
The error about missing resources, especially the ones for splash screen, app icons, etc
Comment 19 Jose Gallardo 2016-12-22 17:12:03 UTC
We've totally changed the way VS interacts with the Mac.
Marking as resolved fixed.
Please feel free to reopen the issue if you can still reproduce it with current bits.
Thanks!
