RESOLVED FEATURE

Description Felix Collins 2013-04-22 22:01:46 UTC
Repro:
* Create a file with some XML in it (like a .resx file for example)
* paste some hebrew chars into one of the elements. like these.... האם ברצונך לעזוב ת
* now try to edit that text by moving the cursor and typing or cut and pasting
- edit operations do not behave as expected.

This problem seems to manifest on firefox on mac too. Maybe it is desired behaviour? It makes it very difficult to edit documents with mixed language characters.

It's built into pango and since firefox uses pango as well I assume it's intended.

From a quick look on the behavior I think it's expected - but I agree that it's a bit strange. I don't know any right to left language and other editors doing that, therefore I'm not 100% sure what's expected there.

I close that one because the problem is not fixable on IDE level :/

I have a colleague who experienced the same issue in MS Visual Studio. it seems to be a widespread issue. The problem from my point of view is that the IDE's are behaving with Word Processor like editing which would be what you wanted if you were a RTL language speaker entering mixed LTR and RTL text. However, in an IDE one usually desires more Hex Editor like functionality where you can enter any characters in the LTR fashion. In an IDE one is usually not writing a novel or a letter but actually writing text destined for machine processing. I suggest that Xamarin Studio could turn of the mixed editing support unless it is explicitly turned on in a setting. Most developers who enter RTL characters probably don't speak RTL languages and are just entering characters for testing or I8N purposes.
